The "D" Books
Book One, "Grandmother Spider" by James D Doss.
I will admit I have been on a Navajo learning quest for over a year now. When I came across this author in the D section, I happily picked up the book. I was not disappointed until the end.
The book begins with a grandmother telling her grandchild not to kill a spider, as Grandmother Spider will crawl out of the depths of the lake and carry her away to feed her children. Later that night, they are awakened by strange noises outside. They go to the front door and see a giant eight-legged creature carrying a screaming human figure into the mountains. What did they see? Is Grandmother Spider walking the earth?
Deep in the mountains, at his grand cabin, a man is getting cozy when he hears a strange noise. He grabs his phone and runs to the front door. He sees the same weird apparition. He takes pictures and follows the creature to the backyard, snapping away with his phone.
The following day, Southern Ute Acting Chief of Police Charlie Moon is confronted with a series of unexplained sightings and a dead body with two deep puncture wounds. It appears Grandmother Spider has crawled out of the lake and is killing people.
Or does it?
This was a delightful read, a good mystery with a great conflicted character until ...the author threw in a sexy blonde. Why? :( I give it four stars. **** It would have been more, but I didn't see the need for a sexpot character. Plus, the ending threw me.
Book two: "Auntie Mame" by Patrick Dennis
I was delighted to find this book! I love the movie starring Rosalinda Russell and the musical version starring Lucille Ball. And the book! I couldn't put it down. This book goes on my Must Buy List. Five plus stars.
First published in 1955, the book sold two million copies and was on the bestseller list for 112 weeks. It was made into two movies and a Broadway musical. Auntie Mame became one of the most iconic fictional characters ever written. The book describes the life of a young 10-year-old boy who is dropped off at his Auntie Mame's during a lavish party. This marks the beginning of his grand adventure in life with Mame.
Honestly, if you haven't seen the movies or read the book, you're missing out.
