The Alphabet Book Challenge "I"
The "I" Books
If I thought the "E" book section was small, it was nothing compared to the "I" book section of authors at the library. Pickings were slim, but good.
Book 1) True Evil by Greg Iles
Talk about an edge-of-your-seat, can't put it down, have to carry it from room to room while you read book!
Alex Morse is an undercover FBI agent working to unmask a killer. Dr Chris Shepard has never seen the woman with the scared face, but Alex knows him all too well. She is investigating a string of mysterious deaths linked to a local divorce attorney whose wealthy clients' spouses have died under suspicious circumstances. Dr Shepard's wife is one of the attorney's clients. It's surprising news for Dr Shepard. Is his wife going to divorce him? Has she hired someone to kill him? Can he trust her? When photos are presented to him revealing his wife's affair, Dr Shepard joins Alex in her search for the truth.
It's a tangled web of greed and deceit. And the deeper it goes, the more the web unravels. The scary, intriguing part is how the murders are pulled off. If you are looking for a book with compelling, complex characters and a mystery that makes you wonder if it could actually happen, pick this book up. I put the author on my "Must read more of their books list." Greg Iles is a winner.
I give it five *****
Book 2) The Devil Takes You Home by Gabino Iglesias
I admit I picked this book because one of my favorite authors, Stephen Graham Jones, wrote a small blurb on the cover: "Some nightmares you wake from just leave you in an even worse nightmare. And then Gabino Iglesias holds his hand out from that darkness, takes you home."
Mario is buried in debt due to his daughter's critical illness. Reluctantly, he takes a job as a hitman to pay back the bill collectors. Tragedy strikes, destroying the life he knew and the future he dreamed of. He needs a new start, a way to claw his way out from the layers of debt. Mario agrees to one final job: hijacking a cartel's cash shipment before it reaches Mexico. Joining forces with an old friend and an insider to the cartel, Mario sets off on a do-or-die mission that will leave him with a cool $200,000 or a bullet to his skull. Traveling through the dark reaches of Texas into the underground maze of tunnels that lead into Mexico, the three men encounter bizarre and unexplained events and nightmarish creatures that defy explanation. Mario knows money can change things. But does it always change for the good? One thing is for sure: if he makes it out of the night alive, he won't be the same.
This was a twisted tale with a medical backstory of mounting debt that many can relate to. How far would you go to get out of debt? To save your marriage? To change your life? To start over?
It was another book I could not put down. Great characters, great storyline, and the emotions! Gabino Iglesias does not disappoint. I will follow this author and read more.
Definitely a five ***** read.
