The Alphabet Book Challenge, "M"
The "M" Books
Book one: "Lamb" by Christopher Moore.
I love Christopher Lamb's writing. It is very tongue-in-cheek, sarcastic, and funny. This book was no exception.
Lamb is about Jesus's best friend, Biff, who is raised from the dead by the angel Raziel to fill in the missing gap in the bible when Jesus disappeared at the age of twelve and was not seen again until he reappeared in Galilee. The name Jesus was translated incorrectly. Jesus's known name was Joshua.
Biff and Joshua have been best friends since childhood. No one loves Joshua as much as Biff does, except for maybe Maggie (Mary of Magdalene) and Mary, Joshua's mother. They left Israel because Joshua wanted to track down the three Wise Men (a magician, a Buddhist, and a Hindu yogi) and learn how to become the messiah. Joshua learns how to multiply food, walk on water, and raise the dead. Biff went along to get laid since Joshua could not know the pleasures of the flesh.
Throughout his role, Biff is a practical, loyal, and sarcastic counterpart to Joshua's idealistic character. But, try as he might, Biff cannot stop Joshua from fulfilling the prophecy he was given.
This was a delightful read, refreshing, and funny. I loved the Biff character. He brought Jesus to life in a more relatable way than the Bible ever did. It made the story more human. Christopher Moore did a great job in bringing the characters to life, making them relatable, and yet keeping (close) to the biblical teachings.
A Five-Star read. :)
Book two: "Three (plus one)" by Ann McMan
I would love to meet Ann McMan, she is one of my favorite lesbian authors. She has an excellent voice. Her characters come to life. The settings are painted well. I devoured this book.
Three (plus one) is four short stories about Diz and Clarissa that take place over four Christmas celebrations. Diz is a fumbling woman who always seems to be getting arrested thanks to the wrong circumstances. She has been in love with Clarissa, who is the daughter of the editing company where they both work. As far as Diz is concerned, Clarissa is way out of her league. And then she gets arrested. Clarissa comes to her rescue and bails her out. They realize they might just have feelings for each other.
Each Christmas, a different set of bizarre situations happen that lands Diz in jail. How they deal with these and the outcomes are hilarious. This is a charming Christmas delight (and I'm not a huge fan of the season). The stories are witty, fun, humorous, fast-paced, and full of non-stop antics.
If you are looking for a fun lesbian read with great characters, pick up any book by Ann McMan.
Another Five-Star read.
